New Discoveries? |
|
post them here.
the only thing i've gotten into particularly recently is The Divine Comedy. they're well good, i can't really explain why. search for Something For The Weekend or National Express if you're curious. it's not rock, not really pop in any modern sense of it... i dunno. so very likeable though, but not in any lack-of-depth way.

good thread idea...
ok, this isnt actually a new discovery, and im sure ben must be getting sick of me mentioning them, but KADDISFLY!
honestly one of the best, most refreshing bands i've heard for such a long time. probably since incubus. i cant really pin down what i like so much about them. great, great lyrics. they actually make you think. and musically theyre wicked as well. they can pull of 10 minute epics without sounding overly pretentious. they are just a very talented, honest band. y'all should check them out. ask me nicely and i'll send you a tune or two next time we're on msn.

i promise i will get into kaddisfly at some point, or at least give them a listening-session worthy of your reccomendations...
anyhow, i found a (not very good) example of something for the weekend by the divine comedy on youtube.

just found this thread again....
circa survive
i'd been hearing good things about them for a while, so i decided to check them out. the album Juturna seems very solid, although it all sounds very samey. i'm not sure how to describe them really, heavy band, the singer has a very high voice, and actually sounds like a woman some of the time. definately a good band though, dunno what you guys would make of them.

I've got Juturna too...it is a good album, but there is better about of what they're trying to achieve I think.

man, i forgot about this thread.
Mumm-Ra! i really like this band... they've got their debut album out this month, so i'll decide then whether i love them or not. got 10 tracks off EP's between me and matt, and they're all wicked.
i made a friend a mix cd the other day, and decided its probably the best selection for a phil mix, so i've done you and james a copy each. its got a couple of mumm-ra tunes on.

preston reed. completely wicked acoustic guitarist, plays a bass line, a melody, a harmony and rhythm at the same time.
king crimson. fairly mental old prog band.

i really like the song teardrop by massive attack, and i've only heard about 3 of their other songs and i don't like any of them. it's annoying, cos i heard teardrop first the other day (which i heard aages ago but didn't really like) and thought i'd discovered an amazing band, but not apparently. just one random good song.

yeah, teardrop is a pretty good song. i kept getting it in my head from the adverts for their best of a while ago.
i listened to that circa survive album last night. i think it might be in the wrong order, either that or tyhey have a secret track in the middle of their album, which sucks. seemed ok, kinda like an inferior kaddisfly at times, sounds like a lot of other stuff but not as good. although the singers voice sometimes goes a bit off the rails, which is cool, that kind of music rarely has actual character. but yeah, i'll give it a proper listen soon.

yeah its in the wrong order. that album has really grown on me. i appreciate that it isnt overly original, and can sound a bit samey, but i think they do it well. act appalled is a wicked song.

this is in no way a new discovery, but with me listening to them much more in the build up to puzzle, biffy have become one of my new favourite bands. not to be confused with favourite new bands, like the twang. whereas mumm-ra are a new favourite AND a favourite new band.

mark wilson, who is a one-man-band guitarist type thing with all of the tapping the guitar, playing detuned basslines, chords, melodies all at once. like preston reed with vocals. only problem is that i don't really like his songs. very impressive stuff when you see it though, i saw him on tv last night. he was tapping percussive stuff on the guitar with both hands, and playing with both hands.

Deas Vail
another of my IOV discoveries. that forum seems to be my main source of music these days.
these guys are kinda ever so slightly proggy guitar/keyboard led pop-rock... thats a bad description i think. basically, its very nice music. when i first downloaded the album nothing really grabbed me, but the more i listen, the more i like it. its just really nice music. and from what i've gathered, theyre christian as well.
